Roman Colosseum Found in Britain

History in the News

February 5, 2007

An enterprising version of the famed Roman Colosseum has been found in Britain. The structure, initially thought to be nothing more than a common amphitheatre, is in Chester. Further excavation yielded much more clues as to the true function of the building.

The latest digging has revealed what looks to be a blind arcade of 80 arches, which is more than any amphitheatre other than the one in Rome. If the archaeologists' suppositions are correct, then this is a significant find indeed.

The dig has also revealed evidence of consumption of expensive food and drink, including lamb, venison, oysters, and salmon. Also found have been broken daggers, shattered armor, and body parts. All of these items suggest that the amphitheatre was used for upscale bread and circuses.
